Antioxidative responses and expression of insecticidal proteins in Bt cotton under high irradiance

Abstract: Effect of high irradiance (HI) on the activity of antioxidant enzymes, rate of lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide accumulation were investigated in non Bt and Bt cotton. The accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2 was higher in Bt cotton. Sustained cultivation of Bt cotton requires stable transgene expression under HI stress. In the present study, Bt toxin proteins (Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab), which are essential for the control of lepidopteron pests, were found to be reduced in Bt cotton under HI stress.
Comparative Studies on Removal of Fast Green Dye from Aqueous Solutions by Activated Carbon Prepared from Gloriosa superba Waste and Alternaria raphani Fungal Biomass

Abstract: A comparative study was done on removal of fast green dye from aqueous solution by activated carbon prepared from Gloriosa superba pericarp and live fungal biomass of Alternaria raphani was used by adsorption technique under varying conditions of agitation time, dye concentration, adsorbent dose and pH. Adsorption depended on solution pH, dye concentration, adsorbent concentration and contact time. Equilibrium time for fast green dye removal using both adsorbents was attained at 60 to 120 min. Increase in biomass dosage increased the adsorption. Adsorption capacity (Qo) of fast green by activated carbon (51.02 mg g-1) was higher than fungal biomass (35.59 mg g-1). The second-order kinetic model described well the experimental data. Acidic pH was favorable for the adsorption of fast green studied. Studies on pH effect and desorption show that chemisorptions seems to play a major role in the adsorption process. Among the two adsorbents studied for fast green removal, activated carbon showed better adsorption capacity. Thus utilization of Gloriosa superba pericarp waste for fast green dye removal has potential application in dyeing industry wastewater treatment.

Abstract: Seedlings of bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. Sel 9) were grown for 2 weeks with half strength Hoagland solution containing 0 ppm (deficient), 5 ppm (sufficient) and 50 ppm (excess) ZnSO4*7H2O. Changes in photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins, soluble starch, photosystem (PSII) activities and thylakoid membrane proteins were investigated. The degree of photoinhibition was determined by the ratio of variable to maximum chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (Fv/Fm). Photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins and soluble starch decreased significantly in Zn-deficient and Zn-excess leaves. Though the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry (Fv/Fm), maximum variable fluorescence (Fv) were significantly decreased to a greater extent in Zn-excess leaves the restoration was excellent. The exogenous electron donors, diphenylcarbazide (DPC) and NH2OH restored the loss of PSII activity in Zn-deficient and Zn-excess leaves. A slight degradation 33, 28-25, 23 and 17 kDa polypeptides were observed in the Zn-deficient and Zn-excess leaves. Upon recovery from HI stress, the Zn-excess leaves restored the 47, 33, and 28-25 kDa polypeptides.

Abstract:

The paper addresses the constrained mean-semivariance portfolio optimization problem with the support of a novel multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (n-MOEA). The use of semivariance as the risk quantification measure and the real world constraints imposed to the model make the problem difficult to be solved with exact methods. Thanks to the exploratory mechanism, n-MOEA concentrates the search effort where is needed more and provides a well formed efficient frontier with the solutions spread across the whole frontier. We also provide evidence for the robustness of the produced non-dominated solutions by carrying out, out-of-sample testing during both bull and bear market conditions on FTSE-100.

Design of a Cantilever - Type Rotating Bending Fatigue Testing Machine  [PDF]

Abstract: This research is centered on the design of a low–cost cantilever loading rotating bending fatigue testing machine using locally sourced materials. The design principle was based on the adaptation of the technical theory of bending of elastic beams. Design drawings were produced and components/materials selections were based on functionality, durability, cost and local availability. The major parts of the machine: the machine main frame, the rotating shaft, the bearing and the bearing housing, the specimen clamping system, pulleys, speed counter, electric motor, and dead weights; were fabricated and then assembled following the design specifications. The machine performance was evaluated using test specimens which were machined in conformity with standard procedures. It was observed that the machine has the potentials of generating reliable bending stress – number of cycles data; and the cost of design (171,000 Naira) was lower in comparison to that of rotating bending machines from abroad. Also the machine has the advantages of ease of operation and maintenance, and is safe for use.

Abstract: Random distribution of sensor nodes in large scale network leads redundant nodes in the application field. Sensor nodes are with irreplaceable battery in nature, which drains the energy due to?repeated collection of data and decreases network lifetime. Scheduling algorithms are the one way?of addressing this issue. In proposed method, an optimized sleep scheduling used to enhance the?network lifetime. While using the scheduling algorithm, the target coverage and data collection?must be maintained throughout the network. In-network, aggregation method also used to remove the unwanted information in the collected data in level. Modified clustering algorithm?highlights three cluster heads in each cluster which are separated by minimum distance between them.?The simulation results show the 20% improvement in network lifetime, 25% improvement in?throughput and 30% improvement in end to end delay.

Abstract: Findings from previous studies have suggested that environmental factors affect the quality of communication. Although the impact of several environmental factors such as fixed- and semifixed-feature elements has been investigated, the present pre-registered study focuses on a more casual environmental factor: the presence of a cup of coffee. In the present study, 118 non-student participants engaged in a dyadic, face-to-face, unstructured conversation with a stranger of the same gender. Participants with a cup of coffee reported an identical level of rapport (a type of close and positive communication), friendliness, vigor-activity, and tension-anxiety as participants with a cup of water (control group 1). They also reported higher rapport friendliness and vigor-activity than participants in the no drink condition (control group 2), though the difference in rapport did not reach the level of significance. However, for rapport, the positive impact of coffee was salient in individuals who held a strong belief in the communicative effect of coffee. The findings indicate that a cup of coffee can be an environmental factor that potentially enhances the quality of communication.
